Abstract

Chromosome polymorphism in farm fry stocks of Atlantic salmon from Asturias.

Abstract

Karyotypes of a Norwegian and a local stock of Salmo salar used to repopulate rivers in Asturias, Spain, were analysed. Of 140 cells examined from 23 Norwegian fish, 120 had a diploid chromosome number of 58, 7 (11 fish) had 57, and 13 (3 fish) had 59. Of 182 cells from 24 local fish, 128 had 58 chromosomes, 44 (8 fish) had 57, and 10 (1 fish) had 59. Between-individual polymorphism differed significantly between the 2 stocks. At 5 months of age, Norwegian and local fish differed significantly for body weight (787.15±34.35 and 432.18±36.57 mg resp.), body length (46.33±0.69 and 40.82±1.07 mm) and ratio of body weight:length (16.73±0.49 and 10.16±0.59).
