Abstract

The Belgian Blue breed in pure- and crossbreeding - growth and carcass characteristics.

Abstract

51 Belgian Blue (BB), Holstein-Friesian (HF), Meuse-Rhine-Yssel (MRY), BB × HF and BB × MRY cattle were fed ad lib. from 7 months of age until slaughter at 12 months. BB cattle had a significantly higher feed conversion ratio, sale price per kg body weight, body weight:carcass weight ratio and percentage lean in the 7th rib cut than any other breed type. BB × HF and BB × MRY were superior to HF and MRY cattle for the same traits. For a compactness index, estimated by carcass weight/(carcass length × inner chest depth), the breed types ranked as follows: HF < MRY < BB × HF < BB × MRY < BB.
