Record of mealybug species on grapevine in Karnataka.
During a survey in Karnataka, India, in 1984-86, 4 species of mealybugs [pseudococcids] were recorded infesting grapevine. Planococcus citri caused more than 75% damage to bunches of the variety Black Champa at Hessaraghatta. This is the first record of P. citri on grapes in India. Maconellicoccus hirsutus was common on grape bunches and caused 80% damage. Nipaecoccus viridis was observed in 2 vineyards in Bangalore and caused up to 5% damage. Dysmicoccus brevipes was of minor importance around Bangalore, and this is thought to be the first report of this pest on grapes.
