Abstract

Zeazin Mix Extra - a new highly effective herbicide for maize.

Abstract

The effect of various herbicides containing atrazine on weeds in maize was tested in small-plot and pilot trials in Slovakia. Excellent control (>90%) of Echinochloa crus-galli and Setaria spp. was achieved with 7-8 litres Zeazin Mix Extra or 5 litres Preazin Kombi/ha. Good control was also achieved with 2.5-3 kg Zeazin Mix or 2.5 kg Zeazin DP 50 at all sites studied, but control efficacy was inconsistent with 3 litres Zeazin S40. Control of Amaranthus spp. was generally lower than that of E. crus-galli and Setaria spp. In small-plot trials at 3 sites, 7-8 litres Zeazin Mix Extra also gave consistently best control of Amaranthus and Setaria spp. and E. crus-galli, regardless of site. Control of E. crus-galli and Setaria spp. was lower at the Bánov site in maize cv. Pioneer 3901. Amaranthus control was generally highest at Slovenský Grob (heavy chernozem soil). In field trials at Bánov and Vel'ké Kostolany, 8 litres Zeazin Mix Extra/ha increased maize grain and silage yields, resp., by 31.1 and 23.9%, compared with the controls (4.08 and 29.1 t/ha, resp.).
