The scale insects of the tropical South Pacific Region. Part 1. The armoured scales (Diaspididae).
This monograph on the taxonomy of the Diaspididae of the tropical South Pacific Region is the 1st of 3 parts planned for the Coccoidea of the area and is intended to provide agricultural staff who are concerned with pest control and quarantine inspection there with a reliable means of identifying species, as well as encouraging non-specialists to identify and study this destructive group of Hemiptera. Keys to 37 genera and 124 species (including 1 new genus and 38 new species) are provided, accompanied by detailed descriptions and illustrations. An account of the economic importance of the diaspidids includes notes on 17 species that have been recorded on various crops and forest trees. A systematic list of host plants, an index to plant genera in plant families, and an index to insects are provided. Among several taxonomic changes proposed, Phenacaspis inday is made a synonym of Pseudaulacaspis cockerelli.
