Abstract

Wetland seed banks: implications in vegetation management.

Abstract

During a study on a wetland of the Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, SE Missouri dominated by Echinochloa crus-galli, Eleocharis obtusa, Polygonum hydropiperoides and Xanthium pensylvanicum, quantitative and qualitative changes were evident in the seed bank, although the seed distribution pattern did not change significantly. Assessment of the interrelation of soil temp. and water matric potential with germination of the 4 species indicated that a slow drawdown with a prolonged period of keeping the soil water content above field capacity would enhance the establishment of a good vegetation cover of species useful to waterfowl.
