Abstract

Discovery of Atoxoplasma in Hawaii.

Abstract

Of 2412 birds of 19 species examined in Hawaii, Atoxoplasma was found in 1 of 961 Zosterops japonicus (Japanese White-eye, new host record), 2 of 69 Carpodacus mexicanus (house finch), 6 of 70 Passer domesticus (sparrow), and 21 of 121 Lonchura punctulata (nutmeg mannikin), Atoxoplasma has not previously been reported from the Hawaiian Islands. The parasites are briefly decribed, and that from the sparrow is identified as A. adiei. Parasite shapes differed among each host group and there were significant differences in sizes.
