Abstract
Early performance of four species of Alnus on derelict land in the industrial Pennines.
Abstract
Tube-grown whips were planted in a split-plot design with and without inoculation (with 'nodule mash' or a pure strain of inoculum) on acidic shales and clay devoid of topsoil and subsoil near Penistone, N. Yorks, UK. Shoot extension and shoot number were recorded after 2 yr. Alnus viridis was as productive as A. glutinosa and showed a high shoot count, and attractive foliage and growth form. A. rubra was productive but top-heavy, and A. sinnata performed poorly. Inoculation had some positive effect on growth in a few cases.
