Abstract

Effect of calcium on the development of brown spot disease of rice.

Abstract

Severity of Helminthosporium oryzae [Cochliobolus miyabeanus] was reduced by applications of Ca at 30 p.p.m., whereas at 50 p.p.m. severity was increased. A negative correlation was obtained between Ca and disease severity in clay and loam soil, a positive one in sandy loam soil. Analysis of the host tissue indicated that disease severity was negatively correlated with K, K/N and Ca status, and positively with P, Fe and Fe/Mn. The Ca content of the plant was negatively correlated with lesion number, which resulted in the reduction of disease severity.
