Specificity of the Bipolaris sacchari-Saccharum spp. interaction.
Interorganismal genetic techniques were used to study the specificity between Bipolaris [Drechslera] sacchari and sugarcane. In 2 experiments in which 9 sugarcane clones were inoculated with 4 isolates and 8 clones with 5 isolates, 3 corresponding gene pairs for low reaction in sugarcane and low pathogenicity in D.sacchari were postulated. Low-high infection type differences resulting from D. sacchari sugarcane interaction indicated specificity (gene-for-gene relationship) between the host and the pathogen.
