Abstract

Orthezia insignis (lantana bug) and Saissetia coffeae (Hemiptera: Coccidae) new pests of Jacaranda mimosaefolia.

Abstract

Up to about 24% of seedlings of Jacaranda mimosifolia in polyethylene bags at a forestry nursery in Karnataka, India, were killed by Orthezia insignis. The bugs were attended by the ants Myrmicaria brunnea, Monomorium indicum, Technomyrmex albipes and Tapinoma melanocephalum. Adult trees were not infested by O. insignis, but trees at roadsides and similar situations were heavily infested with Saissetia coffeae. These 2 species of Hemiptera constitute new records on this food-plant.
