Abstract

Oil, oranges and invasions: economic development and political mobilization in eastern Mexico.

Abstract

This Masters' thesis for the University of Bergen is a case study of a land invasion in Mexico, in a region characterized by strong economic growth as a result of the oil industry. It presents a historical description of the conflict between the economic development, with a concentration of land, and the political development, with agrarian reform and granting of land to the peasants. The land invading peasants are described as being resourceful as compared with other, landless peasants, through kinship bonds and social participation in an ejido village.
