Abstract

Fireblight host plants which are used as ground cover.

Abstract

Fireblight, caused by Erwinia amylovora, does not yet occur in Austria. Cotoneaster spp. are hosts of the disease. Characters of the main Cotoneaster spp. used as ground cover are described, with distinguishing characters of other common ground cover plants. If fireblight gains a foothold in Austria, host plants providing cover under ornamentals will have to be removed and replaced with a variety of non-hosts. Import controls aimed at preventing introduction of this disease are briefly outlined.
