Improving weed management in wetland rice.
Weed control practices in rice crops of Pakistan are described, including cultural and chemical control and management techniques. The major grass weeds are Echinochloa spp., Paspalum distichum, P. scrobiculatum and Cynodon dactylon. Scirpus sp., Cyperus spp. and Fimbristylis littoralis are important weed sedges while Sphenoclea zeylanica, Marsilea minuta, Sagittaria spp. and Ipomoea aquatica represent the main broadleaved weeds. Application of 1.5-3.0 kg Saturn (thiobencarb)/ha post-em., or 0.8-2.0 kg Machete (butachlor)/ha pre-em. or preplanting, or 0.5-2.0 kg Ronstar (oxadiazon)/ha pre-em. is recommended as part of an integrated approach involving appropriate management practices.
