Abstract

Properties of wood from planted, short rotation, fast-grown Leucaena in Taiwan.

Abstract

A study was made of 4-yr-old wood from 3 Salvador types of Leucaena in E. Taiwan. The three varieties gave similar results. Freshly cut sapwood was light yellow, which darkened with age, and heartwood was dark brown. Relative density and pH value were, respectively, 0.59 and 5.6-5.8 for sapwood and 0.52 and 5.2-5.6 for heartwood. Chemical analyses showed that the wood was suitable for both pulp in paper products and dissolving pulp in textile products. Results of mechanical tests showed that the wood could be used in solid products, but the lumber yield and quality may be low because of small diam., knots, and high proportion of juvenile wood.
