Abstract

An illustrated report and discussion based on an interview with the current manager of a sawmill operation near Jayapura, Irian Jaya (Indonesian New Guinea). Aspects covered include: machinery and methods used; the labour situation; timbers processed; and major lumber products. The main timber species are: Intsia bijuga, Manilkara fasciculata, Pometia spp., Palaquium amboinense, Agathis labillardierii, Calophyllum spp., Hopea papuana, Terminalia catappa, Octomeles sumatrana, Homalium foetidum, and Dracontomelum [Dracontomelon] edule.
