Abstract

Irradiation of fruit and vegetables.

Abstract

In this 2nd of 3 articles, the author discusses the use of energy instead of chemicals to kill unwanted organisms in food about to be marketed. Special reference is made to the possible use of irradiation and estimated doses for disinfestation, disease control and delayed ripening of some fresh fruit and vegetables in Queensland. The pests discussed include the tephritids Dacus tryoni, D. cucumis, D. jarvisi, the tortricid Cryptophlebia ombrodelta and the curculionid Sternochetus mangiferae.
