Manual of the Agromyzidae (Diptera) of the United States.
The first part of this manual consists of an introduction and keys, and the 2nd part contains descriptions of new species and taxonomic notes. The introduction includes a literature review, an account of diagnostic characters of the Agromyzidae, and notes on the biology (including their action as leaf-miners), food-plants, economic importance (over 150 species of cultivated plants throughout the world are attacked by agromyzids), distribution (in the USA and elsewhere), rearing, preserving and systematics of these Diptera. The major part of the 1st section of the book is devoted to keys down to species level, and this part ends with an annotated host-plant list. The 2nd part of the book includes descriptions of 85 new species, new records for 43 species in the USA, 22 new synonymies and 16 new combinations. Among the taxonomic changes proposed, Liriomyza phaseolunata is sunk to L. trifolii. In the volume as a whole, 531 species of agromyzids are dealt with.
