Abstract

Screening of some desert plants for feeding preference in Oedaleus senegalensis Krauss (Orthoptera: Acrididae, subfamily Oedipodinae).

Abstract

Sixteen species of plants collected in the desert in Barmer District, Rajasthan, India, were screened against adult males of the agricultural pest Oedaleus senegalensis to determine its naturally-occurring alternative food-plants. The 8 acceptable plants were Cenchrus barbatus (the most preferred food-plant), Dactylactenium sindicum, Pennisetum typhoideum [P. americanum], Panicum turgidum, Elionurus hirsutus, Indigofera cordifolia, Tribulus alatus and Cyperus arenarius. The rejected plants were all non-gramineous, and included Calotropis procera.
