Abstract

Evaluation of antimicrobial compounds for the control of bacterial kidney disease in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson.

Abstract

From a comparison of over 70 antimicrobial compounds by in vitro and in vivo methods, it was found that clindamycin, erythromycin, kitasamycin, penicillin G and spiramycin could be used successfully in early clinical cases of bacterial kidney disease (BKD) in rainbow trout. Cephradine, lincomycin and rifampicin were also effective for chemoprophylaxis of BKD, although they were of no use for therapeutic purposes.
