Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

New medium for detecting Erwinia amylovora and its use in epidemiological studies.

Abstract

The medium, CCT, distinguishes E. amylovora from E. herbicola on the basis of colony morphology. Accuracy is such that 1 cfu of E. amylovora/ml can be detected in the presence of 104 of E. herbicola/ml on CCT. Of 48 virulent E. amylovora strs. tested 45 had similar colony morphology on CCT, while numerous other bacterial species have dissimilar morphologies. CCT was successfully used to detect E. amylovora in apple blossoms, buds and cankers prior to development of fire blight symptoms.
