Leeches on freshwater farmed fishes in Iraq.
Hemiclepsis marginata was recovered from the sides and abdomen of 4 of 25 Cyprinus carpio, 5 of 18 Barbus sharpeyi and 8 of 20 B. xanthopterus kept in a pond near Baghdad City, Iraq. Trypanosoma sp. was identified from the blood of one of the infected fish. Experimental infection of 10 C. carpio with H. marginata was successful with 8 of 12 leeches attaching themselves to the fish hosts within 2 to 7 days. This is a new geographic record for H. marginata.
