Abstract

Wood samples from the relics of (a) Fujiwara Imperial Palace (late 7th century) (b) Heijyo Imperial Palace (8th and 9th centuries) (c) Dazaifu local government building (8th to 10th century) and (d) Mikogaya local government building (8th to 9th century) were identified by their anatomy. Chamaecyparis obtusa was commonly used in (b) and (d). Sciadopitys verticillata was frequently found in (b) and was the only species recorded in (c). Both these species, and also Quercus section Cyclobalanopsis were found in (a).
