Abstract

Acoustic signals in the Homoptera: behavior, taxonomy, and evolution.

Abstract

In this review of knowledge on sound production and acoustic behaviour in the Homoptera, both terms are used to refer to both aerial- and substrate-transmitted vibrations. The data are discussed with respect to their taxonomic and evolutionary significance for speciation, and the topics reviewed include the production of sound by cicadellids, delphacids and other smaller Auchenorrhyncha and the function of acoustic signals.
