Abstract

Population dynamics, biomass and secondary net production of orthopterans with emphasis on acridians in a tropical grassland.

Abstract

The population dynamics, biomass and secondary net production of Orthoptera were studied in a tropical grassland in India from June 1976 to May 1978. A total of 32 species was collected, dominated by Acrididae in terms of both density and biomass. In a stand with mixed grasses and a stand dominated by the perennial grass Desmostachya bipinnata, above ground net primary production was 2.3 and 1.2 kg/m2, respectively; a maximum density of 38.5 and 23.5 insects/m2 was obtained; maximum biomass was 5815.7 and 4199.9 mg/m2; secondary net production calculated from time series biomass data was 4.69 and 2.31 m2; and acridians consumed 220.86 (2.05%) and 267.45 (4.73%) kcal/m2 of above-ground production.
