Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Further studies of lung parasites (Nematoda) from Australian marsupials.

Abstract

Filaroides (Filaroides) athertonensis n.sp. from Thylogale stigmatica in north Queensland, Marsupostrongylus parallelus n.sp. from Satanellus hallucatus in the Northern Territory, M. pseudominesi n.sp. from Trichosurus vulpecula johnstonii in north Queensland, M. vandiemeni n.sp. from Macropus rufogriseus rufogriseus in Tasmania and Marsupostrongylus wallabiae n.sp. from Wallabia bicolor and Macropus rufogriseus banksianus in New South Wales are described and figured. To the formerly monotypic genus Filostrongylus is added F. tridendriticus n.sp., described from Trichosurus vulpecula in Tasmania. The genus Cosmostrongylus (Angiostrongylidae) is described as new, with a single species C. conspectus n.sp. from Thylogale stigmatica in north Queensland. Durikainema sp. was detected in histological sections of the lungs of Phascolarctos cinereus, Macropus agilis and M. giganteus. Keys to the genera of lung parasites and to all species of Filaroides, Marsupostrongylus and Filostrongylus known from Australian marsupials, new host and new geographic records of known taxa and a host-parasite list of lung parasites of Australian marsupials, including those known only from histological sections of lung tissue, are provided.
