Abstract

beta -Galactofuranosidase activity in Helminthosporium sacchari and its relationship to the production of helminthosporoside.

Abstract

Regulation of production of the host (sugarcane)-specific toxin (a beta -galactofuranoside of a sesquiterpenoid) in a culture medium containing H. [Drechslera] sacchari is partly controlled by beta -galactofuranosidase produced by the fungus. The enzyme was isolated and partially characterized from cultures and an ultra-micro method was developed for determination of the galactose released by its action on the toxin.
