Effect of irrigation with saline and sodic waters on the growth of Albizia lebbeck and soil properties.
[See FA 43, 6542] The growth of 4-month-old seedlings of A. lebbeck [lebbek] was measured under irrigation with artificial saline and sodic waters of different electrical conductivities (EC) and residual sodium carbonate (RSC) levels. Soil salinization and alkalinization increased significantly with EC and RSC of the irrigation waters. Growth (ht. increment) of seedlings was reduced by irrigation with saline waters of EC 5 and 10 mmho/cm. With sodic waters (5, 10 and 15 mequiv./litre) no adverse effect on growth occurred until 240 days after transplanting. After this there was a small growth reduction at EC 2 mmho/cm and cessation of growth at EC 4 mmho/cm. Addition of farmyard manure to the pots increased growth only when the best available water (EC 0.4 mmho/cm and RSC 0.6 mequiv./litre) was used for irrigation. Application of gypsum was useful for counteracting the harmful effect of irrigation with sodic water. Seedling growth was satisfactory on a soil with EC [of the saturation extract] 7 mmho/cm and sodium absorption ratio (SAR) of about 40.
