Revision of the African whiteflies (Aleyrodidae), mainly based on a collection from Tchad.
A study of leaf curl and mosaic diseases of cotton in Chad, some of which are transmitted by Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), led to the discovery of many other species of Aleyrodidae there; 96 species (50 of them undescribed) were found in 10 localities in the south-western part of the country. Based largely on these collection, the Aleyrodidae of the African continent are revised, and keys are provided for all the genera and species included. Nine new genera and 42 new species are described, and new synonymy and new combinations are proposed. Under the new synonymy, Aleurocanthus hansfordi Corb. is synonymised with A. zizyphi Priesn. & Hosny, Bemisia hancocki Corb. is synonymised with B. afer (Priesn. & Hosny) and Trialeurodes rara Singh is synonymised with T. ricini (Misra). Details are given of the plants with which the whiteflies collected by the author in Chad were associated.
