Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

On the results and prospects of the introduction of phytophagous fishes into waters of the USSR.

Abstract

In the past decade, young of herbivorous fish, mainly the carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Aristichthys nobilis and Ctenopharyngodon idella were released into many reservoirs, lakes and lake-river systems of USSR. North of 45 deg the fish were not successful, although some individuals grew better than local herbivores. Further south there were open ecological niches and a more suitable climate. Yearlings were better able than younger fish to survive predation. Particularly good results were with yearlings introduced into small cooling ponds of hydroelectric stations in the Ukraine. Article deals with fisheries in which the introduced species were intended to reproduce naturally, or to be restocked from hatcheries, rather than with aquaculture.
