Abstract

Mechanical transmission and structural features of coffee ringspot virus (CRV).

Abstract

Of 33 plants tested by sap inoculation with the virus from coffee plantations in Sao Paulo only Chenopodium amaranticolor and C. quinoa produced local lesions. In extracts of coffee fruit pulp, the thermal inactivation point of the virus was 75 deg C, dilution end point 10-4-10-5 and infectivity 19-22 days at 4 deg . In preparations from C. amaranticolor lesions and diseased coffee fruit pulp, bacilliform and bullet-shaped particles, 191-224 X 66-79 nm and 96-119 X 63-76 nm, respectively, were consistently observed. The morphology, size and structural features of the virus strongly suggest a rhabdovirus.
