Abstract

Evaluation of graminaceous plants as overwintering host plants of green rice leafhopper (Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler: Deltocephalidae: Homoptera).

Abstract

Studies in Taiwan on the suitability of 20 species of common graminaceous plants as food-plants for the rice pest Nephotettix cincticeps (Uhl.) [see next abstract] showed that ratoon rice, barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli), dent foxtail (Alopecurus aequalis) and leersia grass (Leersia hexandra) were the best alternative food-plants. The results showed the importance of winter weed control in order to suppress the large populations of the leafhopper that occur in early spring.
