Abstract

Barbwire Russian thistle seed germination.

Abstract

Barbwire Russian thistle (Salsola paulsenii) dominates severely degraded plant communities in the most arid portions of the Great Basin. It is more suited than S. iberica to arid environments because of the following differences in germination characteristics: (a) after ripening requirements are less restrictive in S. paulsenii allowing some germination at a broader temp. range sooner after maturity; (b) germination is more rapid at low temps. during the first 10 days of incubation; (c) seed dehiscence occurs without the uprooting and tumbling of the plants.
