A rapid method of screening rice varieties for resistance to bakanae disease.
Of five different methods of artificially inoculating grain, soil and plants with Gibberella fujikuroi, dipping newly germinated grains in a spore suspension before sowing induced maximum disease development. In all, 144 varieties and lines were screened using this technique in the field and 21 varieties and lines were screened in the laboratory. The laboratory method appeared superior. The following were comparatively resistant: BR51-46-5, BR20-29-2, Asha (BR8), Bahagia, Shufala (BR9) and BR51-196-2.
