Abstract

Bacterial diseases of soybean in the Soviet Far East and in southern regions of the USSR: search for sources of resistance to them.

Abstract

Pseudomonas glycinea and Xanthomonas phaseoli var. sojense, causing leaf spot, and P. solanacearum, Corynebacterium flaccumfaciens and Erwinia phytophthora [E. carotovora var. atroseptica], causing wilt, were recorded. The pathogens survived 2-3 yr in leaves, stems, beans and seeds. On inoculation soybean, broad bean, lucerne and Onobrychis viciifolia were infected. P. solanacearum was also pathogenic on tomato. In Krasnodar the soybean cvs. Kubanskaya 4958, Kubanskaya 276 and Kharbinskaya 111 were highly resistant to P. solanacearum. In Primor'e Primorskaya 762, Primorskaya 450 and Kormovaya 10 were resistant to X. phaseoli var. sojense. Lists are given of cvs. graded according to their susceptibility to the diseases.
