Abstract

Chromosome number of Cricula trifenestrata Helfer (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae).

Abstract

The results are given of cytological investigations made in 1978 on the testes of pupae of Cricula trifenestrata (Helf.), a saturniid widely distributed in the Indian subcontinent that produces silk of poor quality and feeds on mango and Machilus odoratissima [a timber tree]. Pupae were collected for this study from M. odoratissima in Meghalaya State, India. The chromosome number (n) of C. trifenestrata was found to be 31, and comparisons are made with the chromosome numbers of other saturniid genera and species.
