Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Determination of weed seed content in an agricultural soil as a means of predicting the weed flora.

Abstract

In 1975 soil samples were taken from five separate irrigated vegetable plots in Valencia province for analysis of the seed content; germination tests were then run on some of the dominant species. In darkness at 30 deg C germination was 85% for Portulaca oleracea and 88% for Setaria adhaerens; at 20 deg C 79% of Urtica urens germinated and, after mechanical scarification, 84% of Melilotus parviflora. These results are discussed in relation to those presented in the literature.
