Abstract

A new metacercaria of the genus Gymnophallus (Digenea: Gymnophallidae) parasitic in a brackish water clam, Ruditapes philippinarum.

Abstract

A new metacercaria belonging to Gymnophallus was found unencysted in Ruditapes philippinarum from the Pacific coast of central Japan. It differs from other metacercariae of the genus in the following combination of characters: larger body, numerous gland cells occupying nearly all the area in front of the caeca, oral sucker nearly twice as large as the ventral sucker, bipartite seminal vesicle, deeply 4-lobed vitellarium, simple excretory vesicle and flame cell formula 2 [(2 + 2) + (2 + 2)] = 16. The worm was immature and is not named.
