Abstract

The larvae of fruit-flies (Diptera, Tephritidae). Keys to the fauna of the USSR no.114.

Abstract

This work on the identification of larvae of the Tephritidae (fruit-flies) of the USSR opens with an introductory section on the general morphology of the third-instar larvae and other immature stages, their biology (including tables showing the food-plants or host-fruits of the various species and the various plant species showing which tephritids attack them), their parasites, their geographical distribution, economic importance as pests of fruit and other crops, methods of collecting and preserving material and a key for the differentiation of tephritid larvae from larvae of other dipterous families. This is followed by a systematic section containing keys to the subfamilies, tribes, genera and species of the fauna of the USSR, with considerable information on the morphology of the third-instar larvae in each case, their distribution in the USSR and in more general terms elsewhere, their food-plants or host-fruits and their parasites, with in some cases general remarks. In all, over 40 species are included, some of them subject to quarantine regulations in the USSR.
