Abstract

Relations between forestry and nature conservation.

Abstract

A discussion with reference to the Netherlands and in particular, the role of extensive grazing by domestic animals to preserve or increase ecological variety in the rural landscape, suggesting that such extensive grazing (used as a technique of 'nature management') has an important place in multiple-use forest management. Densities envisaged do not exceed one cow or horse per 10 ha, or one sheep per 4 ha of forest. Observations suggest that such extensive grazing does not compete with feral herbivores.
