Record of new host plants for some important crop pests in Tamil Nadu.

Abstract

In field studies on insect pests of pulse crops in Tamil Nadu, India, the following new food-plant records were noted: Etiella zinckenella (Treitschke) on Cassia tora, C. hirsuta and C. angustifolia; Polyorycta hemirhoda (Wlk.) (Eublemma hemirhoda) on black gram (Vigna mungo (Phaseolus mungo)), cowpea (V. unguiculata (sinensis)) and red gram (Cajanus cajan); Geococcus coffeae Green on green gram (V. radiata (P. aureus)); Thosea aperiens (Wlk.) on field bean (Lablab purpureus (Dolichos lablab)), cowpea, Calotropis gigantea and Ziziphus jujuba; Azazia rubricans (Boisd.) B. on Bengal gram (Cicer arietinum); Amsacta lactinea (Cram.) (Estigmene lactinea) on red gram, field bean, green gram and cowpea; Euproctis scintillans (Wlk.) (Porthesia scintillans) on field bean, daincha [Sesbania cannabina], black gram and green gram; and Heliothis armigera (Hb.) on bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), the ornamentals Chrysanthemum spp., marigold (Tagetes indica) and Calendula officinalis, and the weed Laggera aurita.
