Planococcus citri (Risso), Planococcoides njalensis (Laing) and Phenacoccus hargreavesi (Laing) are the most common mealybugs on cacao at Tafo, Ghana. During extended observations in connection with studies on the rate of spread of the cocoa swollen shoot virus, which is transmitted by mealybugs, over 95% of the colonies within the canopy changed with time and was associated with leaf-flushing.
