Abstract

Solanum and its close relatives in Florida.

Abstract

Descriptions are given of 32 species known to have occurred in the wild and in cultivation in Florida. Two keys are presented for the identification of Florida taxa; one of the keys makes use of vegetative and floral characters and the other key makes use of fruit characters. The prevailing base chromosome number in the genus Solanum and its close relatives is x = 12. Polyploidy is commonly reported in the sections Solanum and Petota but is infrequent in other groups. The aneuploid reports of n = 11 in S. mammosum (section Acanthophora) and the hexaploid report of n = 36 in S. dimidiatum (section Melongena) are therefore of interest.
