Survey of the world's aphids.
This is a general survey of described aphids of the world in which all the scientific names proposed for aphids are listed and an attempt has been made to classify the known species to facilitate future revisions, to stabilise nomenclature and to reduce the incidence of homonymy in the future. As many species as possible were re-examined and synonymy is included. Lack of authentic material for examination has meant that some species have been left in the genus in which they were described, though this does not necessarily imply that the authors of this book consider they belong there. In the first part, the genera are listed alphabetically with their type species and synonyms, together with all the species originally or subsequently validly placed in them, with their synonyms. In the second part, all specific, subspecific and varietal names are listed alphabetically and the genera in which they were originally described and those in which they now occur are given. From this second list, reference can be made to the appropriate entry in the first part. A few new genera and specific names for junior homonyms are proposed, some by the authors of such homonyms.
