Biosystematic studies on the species of Aphytis (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae).
The authors present a resume of a biosystematic revision of the world species of Aphytis, which is nearing completion, and in which the genus will be redefined in relation to allied genera, some 80 species being recognised (28 or them new). Six groups of species are recognised, their zoogeography and phylogenetic relations being discussed. Several new potential natural enemies of injurious scale insects (including Aonidiella aurantii (Mask.), Parlatoria pergandii Comst. P. blanchardii (Targ.), Lepidosaphes beckii (Newm.) and Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comst.) have been recognised. Special techniques that were developed for preparing specimens for study under the scanning electron microscope are described, and examples of photomicrographs using these techniques are given.
