Abstract

Simple extraction and bioassay of the female sex pheromone of the Citrus mealybug, Planococcus citri.

Abstract

In experiments in Italy, the sex pheromone released by females of Planococcus citri (Risso) was extracted from unmated females by ethanol, diethyl ether or petroleum ether but not by toluene, n-hexane or n-pentane [cf. RAE/A 63, 1167, etc.]. Extracts in ethanol, diethyl ether or petroleum ether placed on filter paper or hydrophilised poly(methyl methacrylate) discs elicited high attraction and pairing responses in the males.
