Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

The ecology of the Kafue lechwe population of Zambia before the operation of hydro-electric dams on the Kafue river.

Abstract

Vegetation and associated soil types and seasonal distribution of lechwe (Kobus leche kafuensis) on the Kafue Flats are described. Oryza barthii, Vossia cuspidata and Echinochloa stagnina are the main grasses on the floodplain. Echinochloa pyramidalis, Setaria sphacelata and S. avettea, and Acroceras macrum, Panicum repens and Leersia spp., are common on the shallowly flooded levees and margins of the flood plain, respectively. In seasonally waterlogged areas bordering the floodplain, Sporobolus natalensis, Paspalum orbiculare and Panicum coloratum are common. Diplachne fusca, Sporobolus marginatus, S. spicatus and Chloris gayana are dominant in areas where saline water from hot springs drains on to the floodplain.
