Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Serological studies in the genus Lymantria (Lep.:Lymantriidae). II. Investigations using post-embryonic developmental stages of L. obfuscata Walker, L. dispar (Linnaeus) and L. ampla Walker.

Abstract

Earlier studies in India had shown small but distinct serological differences between the eggs of Lymantria dispar (L.) and those of L. obfuscata Wlk., confirming that the species are distinct. Similarly slight but distinctive differences were found during further investigations on the antigens extracted from whole larvae, pupae and adults of the two species and from larvae, pupae and adults of L. ampla (Wlk.), a local species used for comparison. The antigenic differences between the three species were most pronounced in the adult stage; the only stage in which no serological differences between L. obfuscata and L. dispar were detected was the first-instar larva.
