Abstract

Serological studies in the genus Lymantria. I. Investigations on eggs of L. dispar (Linnaeus) and L. obfuscata Walker.

Abstract

Antisera for two very similar species of Lymantria, L. dispar (L.) and L. obfuscata Wlk., were produced in rabbits in India by giving intravenous injections of the saline extracts of their eggs. By agar double diffusion tests and absorption experiments, serological differences were shown to exist between the two taxa in the embryonic stage, although these differences were relatively small. These results, confirming that L. dispar and L. obfuscata are distinct species, are in agreement with previous morphological studies [cf. RAE/A 57, 2147].
