Banana, plantain and abaca diseases.
The vast changes in cultural and shipping practices in the banana industry in the last 10 yr have led to the need to produce a new and up-to-date appraisal of diseases and their control. In this book emphasis is on the major diseases affecting world export crops, with particular reference to C. and S. America which supply 80% of the market. Chapters are devoted to vars. and banana breeding in relation to diseases; cultivation and shipping practices; nematode diseases; fungus diseases of the foliage, preharvest fruit, postharvest fruit, root, corm and pseudostem; bacterial diseases; virus diseases; noninfectious diseases and abnormalities of uncertain cause; chemical injury; nutritional deficiencies; diseases due to adverse climate and weather; diseases due to adverse soil conditions; genetic abnormalities; restricting disease spread - quarantine measures and eradication; and excluded diseases (reported, but of doubtful origin or minor importance). An appendix lists agricultural chemicals approved for use on bananas by US regulatory agencies and another provides a list of pathogens on banana and related hosts. There is an index and each chapter concludes with a list of references.
